# Richer, More Structured Session Summaries for Everyone

We've upgraded our session summarization engine to provide detailed "What Happened," "Highlights," and "Improvements" for every session, regardless of your tier.

## Overview

We’re excited to roll out a major upgrade to our session summarization engine. Previously, your session summaries were simple, plain-text paragraphs. Today, we’re moving to a rich, markdown-based format that provides deeper insights into every interaction. This update means that every session captured in RCLM now includes a structured breakdown of the task, key highlights of the AI's performance, and actionable suggestions for improvement.

## How it Works

The new summarization engine replaces our old two-pass approach with a single, high-quality analysis for every user:

1. **Structured Markdown Format**: Every session summary now follows a consistent structure with three key sections:

* **## What Happened**: A clear, chronological summary of the interaction and the problems solved.
* **## Highlights**: Key successes, unique tool uses, or particularly effective solutions generated by the AI.
* **## Improvements**: Critical feedback and suggested next steps to refine the implementation or the AI's approach.

2. **Richer Context Processing**: We’ve improved how we feed data into our summarization models. The engine now analyzes up to 40 conversation turns with a deeper focus on the timing and sequence of events, leading to much more accurate and insightful summaries.
3. **Unified Experience**: We’ve eliminated the quality gap between our free and paid tiers for background summaries. Every RCLM user now receives the same high-quality, structured insights automatically.
4. **Intelligent Ingestion Delay**: To ensure we capture the full story, the summarization task now waits at least one hour after a session's last activity before generating a summary. This ensures that long-running agentic tasks are fully completed before they are analyzed.

## Why We Made This Change

As we move toward making RCLM a true knowledge management platform for AI development, we realized that a simple paragraph wasn't enough to capture the value of a complex coding session. By providing a structured, insight-driven summary, we make it much easier for you to review past work, share findings with teammates, and understand where your AI tools are excelling or falling short. This unified approach also makes our background processing more efficient and reliable.

## Current Limitations and Feedback

While this upgrade provides a significant improvement, here are a few things to keep in mind:

* **Retroactive Summarization**: Older sessions with plain-text summaries will be automatically updated with the new format over time as they are re-processed by our background task.
* **Model Performance**: We support both OpenAI and local Ollama models for summarization. While we've optimized the prompts for both, you may notice slight differences in the depth of insights depending on the model used.
* **Richness vs. Conciseness**: We've increased the length of our summaries to accommodate the new sections. We are monitoring feedback to ensure they remain quick to read while providing the necessary depth.

We believe these richer summaries will transform how you interact with your session history. If you have suggestions for new sections you'd like to see or feedback on the insight quality, we'd love to hear it!
